Statutory throughcare

Throughcare predominantly supports, assesses and manages risk of individual who have been sentenced to custody where there are requirements for post-custodial supervision. It is the provision of social work and associated services to individuals and their families from the point of sentence, during their sentence and following their release into their community.

Statutory Throughcare is a service provided by Justice Social Work to people who have been sentenced to four or more years or will be released on:

  • Life licence
  • Parole licence
  • Non-parole licence
  • Extended sentence
  • Supervised released Order
  • Short-term sex offender license
  • Order of lifelong restriction

The person’s justice social worker will keep in contact during the prison sentence and attend integrated care meetings in custody. The service will also, as necessary, provide reports on the individual’s progress to the Courts and Parole Board, and if they don’t comply with these orders, they can be returned to Court or custody.

There will be national guidance for Local Authority provided justice throughcare and national standards for throughcare published by the Scottish Government in due course and a link will be provided when available.
