Not reported/detected

A crime may not be detected. That is to say, it is not discovered to have happened and so is not reported or investigated. It is not possible to quantify the number of crimes not detected as we simply do not know that they have happened.

The Scottish Crime and Justice Survey estimated that only around 29% of property and violent crime was reported to the police in 2021/22. This is at the lowest level since 2008/09. Further information on reporting rates and reasons behind non-reporting can be found in the report, here.
